Punching the numbers
Hardin Central second grader Austin Wilson punches in his student ID number as he buys lunch and cashier Kristy Harp checks her screen telling her how much he has on his account through the Point of Sales register system.
Lunch pre-payment plan expands in Kenton district

The new debit system in place at Hardin Central Elementary in Kenton is making lunchtime hassle a thing of the past for cafeteria workers.
Cashier Kristy Harp no longer has to handle large sums of money when the children come through her line every afternoon. That’s because Hardin Central is the third school in the Kenton City Schools district to convert to the Point of Sales register system, said Laura Widder, Kenton City Schools cafeteria supervisor.
For nearly a week and a half, a POS system has been in place at the elementary and Widder said she is already seeing the lines move quicker.
"Every day students are getting more time to eat lunch instead of standing in line waiting on lunch," Widder said.
The debit system enables parents to pre-pay for their child’s meals, making it less likely the child will lose the money or that it would get stolen, she said.
With the new system, every student punches in their student ID number before buying breakfast, lunch or even milk, Widder said. The cashier then can see by the window that pops up on their screen if the child is pre-paid, free and reduced or if they owe money.
"We also have it programmed that if a child has a food allergy, the screen will flash notifying the cashier before there is a problem," she said.
Widder said the debit system allows for confidentiality for who is on free and reduced price meals because every child buying something from the lunch line must punch in their ID number.
